Spindles: Tommyfield Market

Tommyfield Market has a long and proud history in Oldham – and we want to ensure it has a thriving future.

Our plans

We propose to create a new market within Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre. This market will be a crucial part of our new shopping, leisure and entertainment complex, as well as being better for traders who can benefit from increased footfall, access to the adjacent car parks and nearby public transport stops.

The new market would stretch from Town Square, through the former TJ Hughes unit and extend into Parliament Square. The space will be completely redeveloped to provide a purpose-built new market. This new location offers enhanced visibility in the heart of the town centre, with direct access to both the shopping centre and the Old Town Hall.

Our plans are for a split-level market with a retail market and a wide range of services at mall level while on the lower level, linking to Parliament Square, a food court would be created where visitors could enjoy food and drink from an array of Tommyfield traders. Background

There are several significant investments needed to the existing market hall if it was to remain. We have discussed options with traders previously and staying in the current building is not financially viable. Traders have also shared their concerns about fewer shoppers coming through the doors, and the location of the market being set away from the key areas in the town centre. Refurbishing the existing market hall would not solve this issue – and it would also mean traders would have to move twice – to a temporary home and then back to the existing or new market hall. Many traders understandably did not want to have their businesses disrupted in this way. By putting the market at the heart of the new-look town centre, we can support businesses to grow and thrive - as well as ensuring the market only moves once.
